Do Christmas Lights Raise Your Electric Bill?
LED Christmas lights use a small fraction of the power of old incandescent bulbs, so a professionally installed LED display usually adds only a modest amount to a winter bill. Timers help keep it that way.
It's one of the most common questions we get. The short answer: with LEDs, much less than most people expect.
LED vs. incandescent
Old incandescent C9 bulbs turn most of their power into heat. LED bulbs make the same glow with far less electricity, and they last much longer too.
What affects your cost
- How many bulbs are on your home
- How many hours a night they run
- Your utility rate
- Whether lights run all season or only on weekends
Easy ways to save
Use a timer or the smart app schedule to run the lights from dusk to bedtime instead of all night. That alone cuts usage by more than half compared with leaving them on 24 hours.
What we install
Every Epic install uses commercial-grade LED bulbs, so you get a bright display without old-bulb power use.
Common questions
- Can you put my lights on a timer?
- Yes. We can set timers on standard installs, and smart RGBW lights include scheduling in the app.
- Do LED lights look as warm as old bulbs?
- Quality warm-white LEDs look very close to classic incandescents, and they're what most of our customers choose.
